Marine Research Institute for CSIC
The Marine Research Institute for CSIC represents a transformative addition to Vigo’s former military complex, known as ETEA. After years of analysis and planning, the Institute of Marine Research (IMM), in collaboration with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Ministry of Science, will establish its base in this historic location. As the first institution to operate from this site, the Marine Research Institute will lead research in marine science and technology, focusing on the sea’s impact on local economies. Vigo, Galicia, and Spain will benefit significantly from the IMM’s work, which supports industries connected to the sea, including fishing, maritime logistics, and environmental preservation.
The IMM’s foundation is rooted in extensive studies by Fundación RIA, which carefully assessed the environment and the Teis community, where the ETEA complex is located. This research informed the design of the Marine Research Institute for CSIC, ensuring that it not only aligns with the needs of the scientific community but also respects the local environment and culture. The institute will accommodate over 350 employees and collaborate closely with the University of Vigo and other research centers within ETEA, fostering a vibrant network of scientific innovation and knowledge exchange. This collaboration is expected to strengthen Vigo’s position as a leading center for marine research and technology.
The architectural design of the Marine Research Institute for CSIC is carefully crafted to integrate with the pre-existing structures of the ETEA complex. The proposal draws inspiration from the rhythm and scale of these historic buildings, creating a sense of continuity between the past and the present. The new design introduces clear, functional spaces for laboratories, offices, and communal areas, all of which work in harmony with the existing architecture. This approach not only preserves the historical essence of the complex but also creates a modern and efficient environment for scientific research.
Within the Marine Research Institute for CSIC, the layout allows for flexibility and autonomy among the various research units. Each division is given its own space, enabling scientists to work independently while remaining part of a larger, interconnected system. This design fosters a collaborative atmosphere, where specialized research areas can operate with self-determination, adapting to specific project needs without impacting the work of other units. The result is an environment where innovation can thrive, with each unit equipped to pursue its research goals efficiently.
The laboratories within the Marine Research Institute for CSIC are equipped with state-of-the-art technology tailored to the demands of marine research. These facilities will enable scientists to conduct in-depth studies of the ocean, its ecosystems, and its impact on coastal economies. The focus extends beyond pure science to include applied research that supports Galicia’s fishing industry, maritime transportation, and environmental conservation efforts. By understanding the complex interactions between marine ecosystems and economic activities, the IMM aims to provide insights that will benefit both the local community and the broader region.
Environmental sustainability is a core element of the Marine Research Institute for CSIC project. The building design incorporates eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient systems, aligning with CSIC’s commitment to responsible scientific practices. Natural lighting, sustainable water management, and energy-efficient climate control are integrated into the facility, reducing its environmental footprint. This commitment to sustainability extends to the research itself, with many studies focused on the preservation of marine ecosystems and the sustainable use of marine resources.
As a community-oriented institution, the Marine Research Institute for CSIC will engage with the local population through educational programs, public seminars, and collaborative projects. This outreach is designed to build a bridge between the scientific community and the people of Vigo, fostering a shared understanding of the sea’s importance to the region. By involving local stakeholders, the IMM not only enriches its research but also strengthens its connection to the community it serves. This focus on community engagement is a testament to the institute’s dedication to making a positive impact both scientifically and socially.
The Marine Research Institute for CSIC also envisions strong partnerships with the University of Vigo and other research entities in the area. These collaborations will enhance the institute’s research capabilities, facilitating joint projects that address key challenges facing marine and environmental science. The partnership with the university, in particular, will support academic exchange, provide training opportunities for students, and ensure a steady influx of new talent into the field of marine research.
In conclusion, the Marine Research Institute for CSIC at ETEA is poised to become a leading center for marine science in Spain. Its innovative design, rooted in respect for the site’s historical legacy, combined with a strong focus on sustainability and community engagement, positions it as a forward-thinking institution that will benefit Vigo and beyond. Through its research, collaboration, and outreach, the institute will contribute valuable insights into the sustainable management of marine resources, further establishing Galicia as a hub of scientific excellence. The Marine Research Institute for CSIC embodies the future of marine research, where science, society, and sustainability converge.

Marine Research Institute for CSIC
After several years studying different possibilities in the ETEA, the institute of Marine Research (IMM) together with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Ministry of Science, will be the first institution to establish its base in the old military complex. The main studies developed in the IMM are related to technology and science of the sea and its relationship with the local linked economies with a strong activity in Vigo, Galicia and Spain.
After the studies realized by Fundación RIA, the programme for the new IMM was defined according to the analysis of the environment and the local community of Teis. In addition, the new centre with more than 350 employees, will collaborate with the University of Vigo and other research centres located in ETEA.
The proposal interprets the rhythm of the pre-existence and generates clear structures where the laboratories and offices work in continuum with it. This system gives the IMM the opportunity to distribute the several units of investigation with autonomy and self-determination in accordance with its requirements.
